FHS - On the Plus Side (Week Ending Sept. 19th)

On the Plus Side

...is a simple reminder of some of the positive events that happen at Framingham High School every week. #flyerpride

Flyer Athletics
This past Tuesday, Fall captains met with Springfield College Grad Student, Elizabeth Durant to discuss becoming a leader, how to lead a team as a captain, and what their roles are on and off the field. Our student athletes also got the opportunity to meet with Dr. Tremblay to discuss topics that they think will help not only their teams but the community of Framingham as a whole.
ADC Mentoring/Tutoring Program
The ADC (Academic Development Center) Mentoring/Tutoring program is off to a good start! Mentors and mentees work together on staying organized, completing assignments, and feeling more confident in classes. We are still recruiting mentors, so please reach out if you have a student in mind!
AP Environmental Science
Students in AP Environmental Science traveled to NEU Marine Science Center in Nahant this week. They got a tour of the facilities, hearing from graduate students about their work, explored creatures in a touch tank, and did quadrat studies on different intertidal zones. A BIG thank you to the FHS PTBO for funding this awesome experiential learning trip!

Massachusetts CPR Ambassador Program

Chloe Caterson, a senior at FHS, was selected into the Massachusetts CPR Ambassador Program. This program provides free CPR/AED training through the American Heart Association, ongoing mentorship, and hands-on advocacy experiences with Harvard undergraduates.

Not only will this program serve as natural mentorship and support for any questions about the college admissions process, students will have the opportunity to build leadership and communication skills that will serve them far beyond high school.

Applied Environmental Science
Students in Applied Environmental Science have been investigating virtually why fish may disappear from a river. One of the causes could be a lack of oxygen in the water, which may be caused by not enough sunlight getting through for the water plants to perform photosynthesis. To test this hypothesis, students put spinach leaf disks in clear and colored water, and saw that photosynthesis happens faster in the clear water than in the colored water.
FHS Library
In the month of September, every 9th grade English class will visit the FHS Library to meet the Library staff and learn about how to access the Library's digital and print resources. Teams of students then use their new skills and knowledge to compete against their classmates to be the first to find a series of items in a scavenger hunt around the Library.

The Writing Center
The Writing Center in E109 is where students can get help throughout the day and after school Mon.-Thur. until 3:00. Here is Ms. Allen assisting Dania Bilal, Class of 2026, with her college application essay in The Writing Center.
Framingham Time Capsule - 25 Years
Students from the FHS Chorus as well as the Walsh Pop Choir performed at the opening of the City Of Framingham's 300-year time capsule as part of the celebration of the city's 325th year. Students learned music written in 1975 for the 275th year celebration, and performed at the beginning and ending of the ceremony in which Mayor Sisitsky and Anna Tucker, the director of the Framingham History Center, spoke. Pictures from the metrowest daily news can be found here. The students did a great job, and it was awesome to see them celebrating the rich and storied history of our city.
Precalculus Class
Precalculus students were playing a fun board game to help them practice their skills evaluating trig functions of special angles. The students collaborated really well figuring out the problems involved in the game!

FHS Academy - Evening
FHS Academy - Evening Biology students eagerly looked through the microscope, amazed at how ordinary hair strands appeared up close.
Child Care Center - Yoga
The Child Care Center has kicked off the program for the school year with Yoga for Kids class by Michele Merrick.
Child Care Center - Music
The Child Care Center - Music Class by Hugh Hanley.

Chemistry Class
Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Souaibou's Chemistry class began working on separating mixtures this week with a chromatography lab.
Heritage Spanish 2

Students in Heritage Spanish 2 are bringing their identities to life through a special project in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15–Oct. 15).

Through creative expressions like paintings, podcasts, stories, and collages, students are exploring the ways their culture shapes and connects with who they are. This project not only celebrates Hispanic heritage, but also highlights the unique voices and perspectives of each student.

Chemistry Students
Honors chemistry students hard at work mastering significant figures!

Please Note

This is not meant to be a comprehensive list as we have so many great events happening at FHS.....each week different events, activities and groups will be highlighted.
